    How I saved $428 for a year

Recently, we made a few changes to our utilities to bring down our bill.

    Telephone:

We had a VOIP land-line with Vonage through we used to make a lot of calls to India, where our family lives. However, my Vonage bill was coming up to $43-$44 per month and it seemed excessive to us. So we looked into other options.

One of my cousins suggested Ooma. Ooma is also a VOIP phone which is similar to Vonage except that there's a one-time charge of $149.99 for the modem and setup system. There's also a $39.99 charge for porting your existing number. Other than this, there's an approximately $3.50 charge per month which is basically taxes.

For international calls to India, we decided to try out Skype subscription for international calls which comes to about 800 minutes per month for $8.99. If we exceed that, for extra minutes, it's about 1.5c per minute.

The math works out like this. For a year with Ooma & Skype, per month we would pay

         (149.99 + $29.99)  / 12
      +                               3.50
      +                             $8.99
      =                           $28.32

This gives us a savings of $15.68 per month.

Over the course of a year, this has saved us ($15.68*12) = $188 approximately

    Internet:

My husband and I both occasionally work from home. And we watch Indian TV channels through the internet. So, good quality internet is a must. We used to have TDS Telecom which provided us with 5 Mbps DSL service. Initially, this was quite cheap for us but with time, this had gotten very expensive and even with a customer loyalty discount, we were paying close to $60 per month.

We decided to explore other options and decided to switch to Charter Internet from TDS.

With this switch, we will not be paying $40 approximately for 30 Mbps internet.

Over the course of a year, we will be saving ($20*12) = $240

    Overall savings for the year: $188 + $240 = $428

    Muffin pan shopping

To increase my daughter's intake of vegetables (by sneaking it in), I've decided to make some muffins with some veggies shredded in it. But I don't have any muffin pans at home - so I needed to buy one.

Since I was already looking in Kohl's to buy some stuff, I searched for muffin pans in Kohl's. I have 30% this month and with the free shipping code as well, I thought I'd check it out.

I'm looking for something less than $10 and only 1 pan fit my budget.

The Farberware 12-Cup Mini Muffin Pan seems to fit my needs - looks good and has 2 reviews which 5 out of 5 stars. The price would come to $6.9 approximately after 30% off and free shipping.

I started searching in Amazon for some muffin pans. I found the exact same pan in Amazon for $9.97.

Searching for other muffin pans in Amazon, I found a few more options. Eventually, though, it pretty much boiled down to this one below.

The Wilton Recipe Right Nonstick 12-Cup Regular Muffin Pan is just $6.29. It has 4.8 out of 5 stars out of 637 reviews. You get free shipping if you are an Amazon Prime member or you need to have a minimum order of $35.

Choosing between the two was hard but I eventually decided to go with the Amazon one because of the high reviews and Prime shipping.

How To Get Out Grass Stains

My daughter is very active and loves being outside. When she's running outside and playing on the grass, she ends up falling a lot and getting grass stains on her pants. I make sure to put her in pants because she gets scrapes on her knees everytime she falls. But the downside to that is I have to figure out how to get grass stains out of her pants.

Here are some of the solutions I've come across. I will try them out and update as well.

    • Rubbing Alcohol:  Rubbing alcohol is good at getting stains out. To get the stain out, wet the stain with rubbing alcohol and let it air dry. Rinse with water and then wet stain with some detergent. Rinse again and let air dry. Wash as usual
    • Plain White Vinegar: Wash stain with warm water and plain white vinegar and rub. Wash as you normally do.
    • Rub with  prewash stain remover per instructions and wash as you normally would.
    • Don't use ammonia, degrease or alkaline detergents because they may set the stain in permanantly.

7 Time-Saving Methods for Faster Kitchen Clean Ups Apartment Therapy's Home Remedies | Apartment Therapy

This is something I struggle with - keeping my kitchen clean. My husband and I both cook and the kitchen is always a mess everyday no matter how much I try to.

Perhaps following these tips will help me:

    1. Start clean :- This will probably be the most difficult to implement.
    2. Don't stack :- Load the dishwasher with the dishes immediately; don't stack in the sink
    3. Clean as you go :- This is probably what I feel will have the most impact on me keeping the sink clean
    4. Prepare a soaking station :- Once I have the sink clean, I should be able to start doing this
    5. Fill pots and pans with water :- Should be easy to do
    6. Keep dishes to a minimum :- I already try to do this
    7. Wipe it when it's wet :- This is another one that will be hard to do just because I'm lazy and I hate wiping the countertops.
    8. Spray and wait :- I will have to try this one out.
