    How I saved $428 for a year

Recently, we made a few changes to our utilities to bring down our bill.

    Telephone:

We had a VOIP land-line with Vonage through we used to make a lot of calls to India, where our family lives. However, my Vonage bill was coming up to $43-$44 per month and it seemed excessive to us. So we looked into other options.

One of my cousins suggested Ooma. Ooma is also a VOIP phone which is similar to Vonage except that there's a one-time charge of $149.99 for the modem and setup system. There's also a $39.99 charge for porting your existing number. Other than this, there's an approximately $3.50 charge per month which is basically taxes.

For international calls to India, we decided to try out Skype subscription for international calls which comes to about 800 minutes per month for $8.99. If we exceed that, for extra minutes, it's about 1.5c per minute.

The math works out like this. For a year with Ooma & Skype, per month we would pay

         (149.99 + $29.99)  / 12
      +                               3.50
      +                             $8.99
      =                           $28.32

This gives us a savings of $15.68 per month.

Over the course of a year, this has saved us ($15.68*12) = $188 approximately

    Internet:

My husband and I both occasionally work from home. And we watch Indian TV channels through the internet. So, good quality internet is a must. We used to have TDS Telecom which provided us with 5 Mbps DSL service. Initially, this was quite cheap for us but with time, this had gotten very expensive and even with a customer loyalty discount, we were paying close to $60 per month.

We decided to explore other options and decided to switch to Charter Internet from TDS.

With this switch, we will not be paying $40 approximately for 30 Mbps internet.

Over the course of a year, we will be saving ($20*12) = $240

    Overall savings for the year: $188 + $240 = $428

    ** Great Deal ** Twinings Pure Peppermint Tea - $0.39 per K-Cup

    Budget Baby Shower Gift Ideas

I've always found it difficult to buy gifts for a baby shower. I don't know why. I've had a baby, know quite a bit about toys and baby stuff but still it's hard to guess what the other person would like.

Of course, if there's a wish list given before the event with the invitation, that's the best. That way, you know what to get and there's no confusion. If not, each mother has different needs and likes/dislikes. Some plan to breastfeed, other bottle-feed. Some may want to breastfeed but may not be able to. Some may be very eco-minded, other not-so. Some may have different brands in mind, etc.

I will be attending a traditional indian baby shower in the new couple of weeks. So I've been searching for some gift ideas. Generally, whenever I give such gifts I like to give some baby clothes and a baby toy or something of the sort. Also, it helps to have a budget in mind before buying a gift. Most of the gifts I list below are below $20. Most of them are also toys which were hits with my daughter.

    • Clothes: I like to buy at BabiesRUs, Kohl's and Gap/OldNavy. Generally, I tend to buy 3-6 months or 6-9 months, based on what's available in stores and on how the weather is going to be at the time the baby would be that age.
    • Baby Einstein Take Along TunesMy daughter loved this and I used this a lot especially during diaper changes to distract her. Even now at almost 2, she loves the music on it and plays with it sometimes. Current price on Amazon: $8.09
      • Sophie the Giraffe: My daughter loved chewing on Sophie. While she was younger, she mostly just like the squeaking noise but as she grew older and her teeth started popping out, she enjoyed chewing on it. Even now, with her molars coming in, she loves chewing on it. Current Price on Amazon: $20.20
      • Lamaze Cloth Book: This was one of the first books I bought for my daughter. She loved chewing on it and lifting the flaps. Current Price on Amazon: $9.99
      • Lamaze Play & Grow Freddie the Firefly Take Along Toy: This was one of my favorite toys for my daughter - I could clip it to her playmat and she would pull on it, chew on it and play with it. I've also used it in the car to distract her on the way to daycare. Current Price on Amazon: $12.39
      • Bright Starts Rattle and Shake Barbell Rattle: My daughter loved this rattle - it was her favorite among all the rattles I had bought for her. It was extremely light and easy for her grasp this from when she was 4-5 months. Current Price on Amazon: $5.10

      • Summer Infant SwaddleMe Adjustable Infant Wrap: These were a lifesaver for me. My daughter had a lot of difficulty with sleep and she would move her arms and hit herself and wake up. She was so strong she would kick out of regular swaddle blankets. Once I started using the SwaddleMe wraps, they helped a huge lot and were a timesaver as well and it was so easy to use them. Current Price on Amazon: $16.22 (different prices for different colors)
      • Graco Sweet Slumber Sound Machine: I actually received this as an unexpected baby shower gift from a friend. I didn't use it for a long time till I read the book "The Happiest Baby On The Block" where it was suggested to use a sound machine to help the baby sleep better and it actually worked. I still use the sound machine to block out household noise so my daughter doesn't wake up. Current Price on Amazon: $29.98

      Saving at Rite-Aid

Some things I noticed & learned today at RiteAid:

      • Wellness+ program: This is a good program to be in - you earn 1 point for every $1 you spend. If you get more than 250 points, you become a Bronze member and more than 500 points in a year, you become a Gold member. With Bronze & Gold membership, you get 10% off Rite-Aid products and 10% off everything in the store. With Gold membership, you also get a reward which you can redeem within 90 days. I noticed on my bill when I left Rite-Aid that I had 199 points accumulated already. By the end of the year, if I can get another 49 points, I will get 10% off RiteAid products all through the next year.
      • I had bought some princess band-aids for my daughter in RiteAid. I noticed online in Amazon that they were a little expensive and some sellers had it for $5.99 and the cheapest I found online was for $2.99 at a few places (and Amazon was not the cheapest since I would have had to pay for shipping when it was $2.99). In Rite-Aid, the price was $4.79 but with Wellness+ program, it was 2/$6 - which comes to about $3 per packet. So in the end, the price was almost the same but if I did not have the Wellness+ card or did not buy 2, I would have had to pay more.
It always pays to do some research.

      Financial Goals and Savings Counter

My current financial goal is to bring down my mortgage by $20k this year. This is a lofty goal but I'm hoping to make it this year.

I've decided to add a savings counter to my blog where I will put how much money I've saved each month with coupons, sales, etc. At the end of each month, I will take that money and put it into my mortgage.

Let me start the counter from today. I shopped at Rite-Aid today to buy some supplies. I bought some Lubriderm moisturizer, some handwash liquid and band-aids for my daughter.

With the Lubriderm moisturizer, I saved $1.50 by using this coupon.

      Total Saved: $1.50

      Cash back programs

In general, I'm not a fan of cash back programs since my only experience with them has been with Ebates and every time I've tried to use Ebates, it's never worked for me.

Everytime, I've had some issue or the other and I've never earned anything, despite the back I buy so much online.Recently, I found out that perhaps Adblock has been blocking my attempts to get Ebates. I modified Adblock on my computer to bypass Ebates.com and tried to buy something. I will post an update in a couple of days on how that turned out.

I use American Express Rewards and HSBC rewards to get 1% cash back on all purchases.Other than these, so far, I haven't used any other cash back opportunities.

Another cash back program I've heard of recently is BigCrumbs. I will try it out and post about it.
